Feeding a puppy that does not want to eat:

Puppies can refuse to eat for many reasons.  Could be due to depression (if left along for long periods of time with no one or no other animals around), medical reasons etc....

  1. If your puppy is refusing to eat and goes into sugar shock i suggest you take it to the vet to make sure there is no medical reason for it not to eat. (make sure you give it karo syrup and get the puppy warm if in sugar shock, then take to the vet).
  2. Ask your vet for a/d prescription diet dog food
  3. Take a 3cc needles syringe full of the add food (suck it up like you would medicine)****amount of food will vary on the size of the puppy****
  4. Give a little at a time until it is gone every 2 - 3 hours for the 1st 24 - 48 hours
  5. About 11pm give 1/2 cc karo syrup with this feeding repeat this at 3am (this will help them thru the longer hours between these nightly feedings, these are the most important feedings).
  6. You should start to notice them wanting more after a day or so start trying to let them eat a little on there own then feed the rest with the syringe up the dose to 6cc or more if they are still hungry (they should start wanting to eat a little on there own but make sure they are eating on there own and eating enough to avoid the sugar shock.  The more they begin to eat the longer they can go between feeding.
  7. Also during this critical time make sure the puppy is kept warm with an electric blanket on low or covered heating pad on low.  Stress should be kept to a minimum.
  8. If you have a postal scale or kitchen scale then i would advise you make sure you puppy is not losing weight by weighing them 1 - 2 times a week.
