Winter Weather Care

Rock salt and most chemical de-icers cause cracked sore pads, blisters and infections.  Be sure to take a little extra time to inspect there paws (between there toes and there foot pads).  Check for cracks and inflamations.

Once you have brought your dog/puppy back inside, immediately wash there paws with luke warm (never hot) water.  Even if there are no visible signs of irritation.  This is important not only to prevent problems with their feet but most dogs/puppies with lick there paws and since ingesting rock salt and chemical de-icers can have a toxic effect it is very important that there paws are kept clean.

A safe alternative is sand or cat litter.  Although these products do not melt the ice they do provide traction.

It is also very important to keep there nails trimmed expecially during the winter months.  Untrimmed nails can lead to sore nailbeds or even a torn nail.  When nails are left untrimmed and become long the toes will spread leaving more space for snow, ice, rock salt and chemical de-icers to build up.

Your could also try boots.  It usually only takes a little time for them to adjust to wearing boots.  Try having them wear them in the house for awhile first getting them use to the feel of walking in them.  You will need to keep checking the fit and adjust as needed.  Never leave a dog/puppy wearing boots unattended.

Never leave a small (10 lbs and under) puppy outside for more than the time needed to use the bathroom and maybe a few minutes for play.  Try using a sweater or coat to help them stay warm.
